Another day in NC, another DG match. The Sugaw Creek course was chosen as the venue for this day. As has happened many times in the past, the golden child, KC "Eagle" Reeves, once again lost nerves and feathers in his hurry to escape an important match. Eagle has this annoying habit of flying from serious challenges, especially after making boastful comments.
No matter. Darrell "TM" Gilman and "Puma" Pawson showed up at the appointed time and place to play the game. The course is advertised on its website as “Very challenging with mostly tight holes laid out through the woods. Several open holes too. Every hole is reachable if you can throw 375' [through trees]”. The day was sunny and the winds were light. It was a beautiful day for disc golf. So beautiful that many other players had the same thoughts and were already on the course. TM and Puma decided to jump ahead of most of the big crowds and started off on the 9th hole. The hole, a slight right dogleg, had a large open fairway to the left and several trees and bushes on the right. Both players struggling to warm up played admirably with TM making par. The 10th hole was interesting. Long and fairly straight with a road on the right hand side and a significant clump of trees and bushes on the left. TM badly heaved his tee shot into the nearest tree on the left. Puma decided it was wiser heaving his disc into the heavy clump in the middle of the fairway. Puma jumped into the lead with another bogey as TM posted a 6. The next hole was long and wide open. Tm struggling to find a throwing technique that doesn’t re-injure his shoulder struggled with his tee shot. Puma launched a wonderful drive, setting up his first par of the night. #12 and #13 were played in the woods which both players hit. TM played well though mounting a comeback to tie the score. #14 was quite interesting. A short hole with a very narrow tree guarded entrance that opens up to a slight left dog leg that houses 6 or 8 trees guarding an elevated hole. Puma mentioned that he will have to bring his camera the next time to take pictures of some of these holes.
Holes 15, 16 and 17 all have woods near the tee boxes and open up in the fairway before guarding the hole with more trees. Back and forth the scores went. TM would tie and then Puma would retake the lead. Hole 18 is open at the tee box and short about 250 feet. But the hole is entirely surrounding by trees. The front 9 proved quite interesting. Puma would take the lead, only to lose it at the next hole, only to retake it again. TM tied the score on #1 with a nice throw through the trees. Puma’s tee shot hit the trees and he settled for a bogey. On the second hole, Puma tried out a new throwing technique and launched a wonderful straight drive down a very narrow path to once again take the lead. However, on #3, it was TM’s turn to stay in the fairway while Puma trampled through the woods. TM tied the score once again. TM went tree hunting on #4 and Puma took a 2 shot lead which lasted exactly 1 hole as Puma went tree hunting to tied up the score once again. After 15 holes, the score was tied. TM took control of the match on #6 with a nice par putt to an highly elevated hole while Puma missed to register a bogey. On #7, there is a significant tree branch that is stretched horizontally across the end of the tee box about 5 feet off the ground. TM launched a beautiful drive under the tree branch to the dog leg right pin position. Puma not to be deterred, launched an equally impressive drive. Puma made par as TM missed his par putt to tie the game up once again. On #8, Puma struggled in the woods but TM missed his 15 foot par putt to allow both players to record a bogey and keep the game tied.
It was a fun match to watch. Although Puma struggled most of the night, he was a real trooper. You could tell he had that champions heart which is just one reason why we follow him as fans. TM did well also. This course was tough. Too bad Sunshine got scared. Keep going Puma, we are rooting for ya.
Caring, honest, truthful, gracious and magnanimous are just a few of the outstanding qualities this cat possesses.
A good team player as well as a good poker player, this cat can do it all. Quickness and speed help him with basketball (no small feat for a cat). But it is his cunning that is most feared by all.
